Maga

I haven't done any portrait work for a little while now. So here's a portrait of the wonderfully beautiful Maga. Check her out on her Tumblr.

Crime Alley

I've had Batman on my mind a lot lately (damn you Arkham City!) so I've been a bit lost in in my head, going through my own vision of Gotham City. But I've been doing this a little bit too much. So I'm making this my final Batman themed painting. And what better way to finish than to show the tragic event that created an icon. This is Crime Alley...

Street Concept

It's been a little while since I've posted anything up on here. Work has been keeping me busy!  Anyway, I've been trying a couple of new techniques for creating environments.  I think I still need to find my own 'style' or 'way' of doing things yet.  However, I'm picking up bits and pieces, so it's just a case of combining them into a way that works overall for me!  I'm getting close!

Here's a piece I've been working on lately using more photos and texture manipulation than I usually do...

Victor

Out of all Batman's villains, Mr. Freeze is not only the most interesting and unique, but the most sympathetic. He's not a homicidal maniac or an agent of chaos, like the Joker. He never wanted to destroy Gotham or the World. He's not insane or corrupted by greed. All he cares about is finding a cure for his terminally ill wife. But his quest is so desperate and gone to such extremes that the haunting reality is he's created a monster he can never escape from. When I think of Mr. Freeze, I don't see an evil super villain. I see Victor. A cold, heart broken and lonely man who'd do anything for the one he loves.

That's what I tried to show in this image...

The Dark Knight

My vision of the Dark Knight. I find it a bit strange when his life gets glamorised or idolised. Or even envied. I think a person who dedicates and surrounds his life with rapists, murderers and monsters would become quite an angry, lonely bastard of a man. I love the character and the world he inhibits, but I've never seen it as a happy one.

Planet Corona Work: Character Design: - 'Wyman'

I took a detour from my Planet Cornona work recently. So here's a new character. The heavily scarred, Captain Wyman.

Tutorial Painting

Working at the University has been quite a weird experience. Within the space of a year I've gone from being on one side of the education system then thrown onto the other side without really realising it!
Since there hasn't been any students over the summer, we've been refining how the students will be taught next year. So I've been asked to set up a digital painting tutorial for next year teaching the pure basics of Illustrator and Photoshop, then building more skills and techniques on top of that. Was a bit of challenge since I've never wrote one before! But it was a good experience!
Anyway, these images are examples that will be shown to the students. The idea is to give them the template of this drawing, then teach them how to edit then paint it. I'm really curious to see how well they do!

"Cause and Effect..."

Well, I've finished off a scene from the book. Well...it's not a scene from the book, BUT it's a scene set after a very specific event that happens to Lisbeth. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't read the book, but hopefully those who have will know what I mean.
I might add some more minor details to the image, but I was quite happy with my day of binge painting and I was kinda excited to get it up here as quick as I could! (for a change!)
I was pondering whilst painting this image. I might paint Lisbeth's "scene of revenge" next. Not sure just yet, but what the hell...I might as well while it's all fresh in my brain!!

Lisbeth Salander

I recently finished readin Steig Larsson's 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' and I'm currently blasting my way through 'The Girl Who Played with Fire'. Have to say, it was probably one of the best books I've ever read and I loved the character of Lisbeth. So much so, it inspired me to paint this character sketch, and I'm starting to work up a painting inspired from a scene in the book. Hope this painting does Lisbeth justice!

The Northern Cavern (in progress)

Been working on and off on this image the last 2 days. I think I'm going to re-work into it and decide whether I want to keep the cavern entrance on the right handside. Hmm. Play around I think! Also, i want to know why I have colour loss when I upload an image onto the Internet. The image I have, when viewed in PhotoShop and Windows Photo Viewer, is a darker and has a stronger contrast on the mountain cliffs. Upload it onto here and it's lost! Damn technology.

UPDATE: Version2

Still haven't cracked the problem of why I'm getting 'washy' colours when uploading onto the Internet. I know it's to do with RGB vs sRGB but I'm not winning the battle. Anyway, moving on now!

"See I like makin' love myself. And I can make love for about three minutes! I do about three minutes of serious f*ckin', then I need eight hours sleep! And a bowl of Wheaties! "

Hi all! I been trying some new methods of painting to 'mature' my art style and make my images look more painterly. So it might be a while before a come back with something new as trying this process looks as though it may take its time. Trial and error, right? Anyway here's a painting I did this morning for you to enjoy for now.
Think I'm starting to get the hang of this portrait malarky! I know I need to do more environments, but I just love doing this. Anyway, time to behave and move on. I've got a plan and need to stick to it!

This painting is based on a screen grab from Richard Pryor: Live in Concert, made in 1979

Mass Effect 3 Competition

I'm entering a competition on CGFeedback.com where you get the chance to design a character to appear in the new Mass Effect game. Being quite a large fan of the franchise, I started foaming at the mouth thinking about this massive opportunity and I very quickly started working on it. Here's some of the pieces nearing the end for the character I've done. Click on the link below to visit the forum to see my work as well as the other entries.

Oh, and thanks to Neil Thompson, the Art Director at Bioware who encouraged me to enter this competition. Cheers Neil!

Planet Corona: Deliverance Market Version 2

I decided I wasn't happy with my first design, so I started again. I feel a lot happier about this image! :)

Mountain Scene

I'm starting to try my hand at speed painting no to help generate more environment pieces. This one took about an hour and a half or so

'The Lovestache'

I saw a photograph when I was looking around on DeviantArt the other day. I was in a strange bad mood, for some reason or another, and after viewing this photo I was left with a massive smile on my face! So after speaking to Cat directly and gaining permission, I quickly painted it up.

So here it is. And thank you Cat for cheering right me up! Check her out on deviantart! Deviant name: artemisroseshadow

Character Sketch

Just a sketch design for a larger idea bubbling in my head...

'Office Work'

Erm, I think this image merits an explanation!
The idea came up a few months ago when I worked in a Tele-sales office. I hated it with a passion, as did about 80 percent of the people in the room! Soooo, I had the idea of a guy who felt extremely fed up; who hates his job but needs it at the same time. Enough is enough and he tries to escape. Boom.
I'd like to point out, as there was some concern by the girlfriend when she saw this final painting, that I never was, never have or ever have wanted to blow my own little head off :)

Kokeshi

Boredom strikes again, so here's another portrait of one of the lovely 'Suicide Girls'
